Holiday Martini-More Than Just a Cocktail-The Marguerite Cocktail

Sunday, December 19th, 2010

I cannot seem to write about festive food or holiday parties without including one more martini. Then I go to my favorite martini book, called The Martini, by Barnaby Conrad III for inspiration. I agree with Barnaby who said “The martini was and still is more than just a cocktail.”

Here is the first documented recipe for what was called the Marguerite cocktail in 1896 by Thomas Stuart

Marguerite Cocktail
Ingredients

1 dash of orange bitters
2/3 Plymouth gin
1/3 French vermouth

Method

Stir gently with ice and strain into a chilled martini glass.

They still make it this way in many of the old classic bars in London, England. I prefer mine with less vermouth.

Quote Appropriate for Thanksgiving

Thursday, November 26th, 2009

My sister-in-law, Barbara Dennis, recently shared a quotation with me that seemed appropriate for this time of year.

It’s important to dot our lives with unscheduled as well as scheduled feast days. That way we remember that we are able to make joy as well as to expect it. Or as Lin Yutang, the Chinese philosopher put it: “Our lives are not in the lap of the gods, but in the lap of our cooks.”
The Hill Team all hope your holidays, current and upcoming, as well as every day going forward, is a celebration of your life.
