Summer in Phoenix Offer Value at Resorts

Sunday, June 5th, 2011

Resort deals, vacation giveaways signal summer’s arrival in Phoenix

PHOENIX (June 2, 2011) – In the northern hemisphere, the start of summer is marked by the summer solstice. But in Greater Phoenix, there’s an even surer sign summer is here: Resplendent resorts become as affordable as roadside motels.

All across metropolitan Phoenix, $199 rooms are morphing into $99 rooms, and $379 rooms are suddenly $179 rooms. At some resorts, the reduction from peak rates is as much as 60 percent.

To help savvy vacationers (and Arizona “staycationers”) find these summer values, the Greater Phoenix Convention & Visitors Bureau has partnered with the Arizona Republic to produce the newspaper’s annual SummerScapes insert. SummerScapes also is distributed in the Arizona Daily Star in Tucson, and a digital version is available online.

SummerScapes showcases summer specials at nearly 30 properties across Greater Phoenix, from romantic resorts with secluded swimming pools to family-friendly hotels with lazy rivers and waterslides. Among the values:

  • Rates start at $99 at Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort & Spa, which is also offering a $50 resort credit for guests who stay two nights or more.
  • Rates start at $109 at the stately Arizona Biltmore, which is bringing in musical acts such as Jeff Bridges (performing songs from the Oscar-winning film Crazy Heart) during its “Hollywood & Wine” series of summer events.
  • Rates start at $109 at the Pointe Hilton Squaw Peak Resort, an all-suites property with a private water park.
  • Rates start at $179 – with a nightly $50 resort credit - at the Montelucia, which recently was ranked as the “Top Resort in Arizona” by readers of Travel + Leisure magazine.

“These rates are a steal any summer,” said Doug MacKenzie, director of communications at the Greater Phoenix CVB, “but they are especially attractive to fans and families who are considering a trip to Phoenix for Major League Baseball’s All-Star Week.”

Greater Phoenix plays host to the 2011 MLB All-Star Game on July 12. The game caps five days of events, including the XM All-Star Futures Game, the Taco Bell All-Star Legends & Celebrity Softball Game and the State Farm Home Run Derby.

All-Star FanFest, the most fan friendly of All-Star Week’s activities, will be open to the public from July 8-12. This interactive experience will transform the Phoenix Convention Center into a baseball lover’s fantasy land, with life-sized video batting and pitching cages, clinics taught by Major League legends, and free autograph sessions with MLB legends.

Also, the first-ever All-Star Charity Dance Party will take place July 9 at the convention center. Zach Woodlee, the acclaimed choreographer from the hit TV show Glee, will preside over a Saturday night dance-a-thon and judge a dance contest open to all party attendees. Net proceeds from the event will be donated to three charities supporting the fight against cancer - Stand Up To Cancer, the Prostate Cancer Foundation and Susan G. Komen for the Cure - and the winner of the dance contest will win a meet-and-greet visit to the set of Glee.

“I think All-Star Week will prove to a worldwide audience what locals and seasoned summer visitors have known for years - that Phoenix’s beauty and value transcend the heat,” MacKenzie said. “You’d be surprised how cool you feel sitting in a poolside cabana with a frozen beverage in your hand.”

The Greater Phoenix CVB is upping the ante for summer values with its Summer Sweepstakes, which gives entrants the chance to win multi-night stays at eight resorts. Entry into the Summer Sweepstakes is available online at VisitPhoenix.com.

The participating resorts are Arizona Biltmore, Fairmont Scottsdale Princess, Four Seasons Resort at Troon North, Hyatt Regency Scottsdale Resort and Spa at Gainey Ranch, Montelucia, Pointe Hilton Resorts, Radisson Fort McDowell and The Wigwam.

Far and Away Adventures Announces Three American Safaris With Wilderness Photography Artist James Bourret

Saturday, April 23rd, 2011

We’ve not taken part in these programs, however they look so intriguing, I wanted to pass on the information from Far Away Travel.

SUN VALLEY, ID, April 6, 2011 – Known for blending river rafting with wilderness adventure and backcountry luxury, Far and Away Adventures (http://www.far-away.com/) announces three American Safaris showcasing wilderness photography workshops for aspiring shutterbugs.

These programs with fine art photographer and wilderness specialist James Bourret are July 27-29 and July 29-Aug. 1, 2011 on Yellowstone Lake and Aug. 11-16, 2011 on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River in Idaho, one of the world’s most revered wild and scenic waterways.

The 2-night Yellowstone Lake photo workshop is priced at $1,040 per participant, double occupancy. The 5-night Middle Fork of the Salmon workshop is $2,990 per participant, double occupancy. A shorter 2-night Middle Fork trip option is also available. Prices include all customary tour inclusions plus associated workshop instruction and activities. For non-workshop tour participants, price is $100 per night less.

Bourret is also a practicing architect based in Ketchum/Sun Valley, ID. His love of the natural world was cultivated in his youth spent at play in California’s Sierra Nevadas. See: http://jamesbourret.photoshelter.com/.

Beginning the first evening, each day of a trip includes small group and one-on-one working sessions with Bourret who will focus on improving skills using the digital SLR camera and tripod.

Topics include, among others, composition, manual and long-exposure techniques, focus and depth of field, and filters as they relate to landscape, wildlife and outdoor action photography. Sessions will be split up throughout the day, with emphasis on spending time photographing during the magic twilight hours. Each day will also include a review of the day’s images on a laptop (not required) in camp, which will promote discussions of image adjustment techniques.

Steve Lentz, founder and owner of Far and Away Adventures, says participants on his American Safari can anticipate the quality of North American big game wildlife sightings in their natural setting to rival those of an Africa safari experience.

This Yellowstone program provides opportunities for lake kayaking, guided backcountry hikes, wildlife observation and fly-fishing based from a luxurious wilderness camp on Yellowstone Lake, the largest freshwater alpine lake in North America. Guests access the deluxe camp by powerboat from Bridge Bay Marina inside the Park. See

http://www.wildyellowstone.com/yellowstone.html

The Middle Fork of Idaho’s Salmon River departure comes with, in August, playful Class III rapids through a 100-mile stretch of pristine wilderness.

On river and lake alike, tented camps that could be straight out of Africa embrace guests after a day of exploring. A chef prepares organic feasts with local microbrews and wines to be sipped from crystal stemware. This level of sophistication, comfort and concierge attention attracts A-Lister’s Stephen Spielberg and Kate Capshaw, Mariel Hemingway, and the Nordstrom’s, to name a few.

Solar lanterns, hot water for showers and state-of-art tents with elevated beds, flannel linens, carpets and nightstands ensure sweet dreams.

Far and Away Adventures has been sharing the excitement of paddling with adventuresome guests since 1980. Simply, the wonders of nature and those created by Far and Away Adventures for guests plying these and other privileged waters create a new category for those who seek experiences above and beyond the ordinary. Far and Away Adventures’ guests are moved beyond world-class into a universe where luxury and wilderness blend marvelously together. For a detailed itinerary on this and other programs on equally privileged waters, please contact Far and Away Adventures; toll free 800-232-8588 or visit the web site  http://www.far-away.com/.

Arizona Science Center is proud to present their newest permanent gallery, The W.O.N.D.E.R. Center, which is now open. An exploration of the original super computer, the human brain, this visionary new gallery will examine the anatomy of the brain, neuroscience, development, and thought to further our mission to inspire, educate and entertain people of all ages about science.

The Valley Youth Theatre Presents Alice in Wonderland. Experience the enchantment and follow Alice down the rabbit hole. Regarded as one of the greatest children’s books ever written, Lewis Carroll’s cherished story will delight and engage children and adults alike. Join Alice as she chases the White Rabbit, races the Dodo Bird, and beats the Queen of Hearts at her own game. With dozens of madcap characters, this is one exciting journey you won’t want to miss.

This spring, crustaceans will scuttle to Sea Life Arizona with the opening of its newest display, Claws. The five-tank Claws exhibit  features Japanese spider crabs, which can grow to 15-feet across, and coconut crabs, named for their ability to crack open coconuts with the power of their claws. Guests journey to a world where even the tanks have sprouted claws to see the extraordinary weapons and defenses of these fascinating alien-like creatures of the deep. Interactive features, such as a touch display that allows guests to feel the shell textures of different crabs, make learning about these animals a thrilling experience.

Seven new tenants recently joined the rapidly growing Scottsdale Quarter, a 28-acre shopping, dining and entertainment district at Scottsdale Road and Greenway-Hayden Loop. In January, the Quarter welcomed Paris Optique,  Elan Style, Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt, Parc Central, TK’s Urban Tavern and Avalon Spa and Nails. Eddie V’s Prime Seafood is the most recent addition.

Six days of food, fun and sun await you at the Scottsdale Culinary Festival April 5-10 in downtown. Kick off the weekend at the Eat, Drink & Be Pretty Party, a fashion-forward event with food and wine from more than a dozen restaurants. Don’t miss the signature Great Arizona Picnic at the Scottsdale Civic Center Mall with loads of family friendly food fun like the Challenge to the Chefs in-kitchen battle reminiscent of “Iron Chef”. Or, watch cooking demonstrations and sip on wine and cocktails at the Cooks & Corks event, which also utilizes freshly grown produce from the Civic Center’s Giving Garden.

Two Mountain Lion cubs are now on temporary display at the Wildlife World Zoo & Aquarium Baby Animal Nursery. These are the first mountain lions ever to be featured at Wildlife World in its 26-year history. Since its inception, Wildlife World has focused on featuring an ever-growing list (currently over 600 species) of nonnative exotic and endangered species from all over the globe. However, given the elusive nature of these large predators and their importance to maintaining a healthy ecosystem, zoo officials leapt at the educational opportunity to bring these animals to the West Valley during the spring months, when school field trips are at their highest levels.
